Here’s todays recipe for a tasty, filling and nutritious shake 🙂
1 Cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk
1.5-2 cups water
couple ice cubes
2 tbsp Gogi Berries
2 heaping tbsp raw cacao powder
3 scoops Organic Hemp protein powder
1 large tsp Green Power Blend
1 large handful of spinach
1 large handful of sunflower sprouts
Blend in a high powered blender!
Using only hemp protein powder can be a little heavier and sometimes a bit ‘grainy’. Adding 1/2 banana and more ice will help thicken the shake up (and sweeten) and make it less noticeable, although this doesn’t bother me.
If it’s good for you…just drink it already!
Here’s why this shake is awesome
GOGI BERRIES: Gogi berries are arguably one of the best berries out there. They are a complete protein and contain 20 + trace minerals making them a strong adaptogen & powerful antioxidant. This means immune booster all around. Remember hearing about blueberries being high in antioxidants? Well, gogi berries knock them outta the park with 2-4X MORE antioxidants.
RAW CACAO POWDER: ummm, chocolate. I could just stop there, but there’s waaaay more to know about this awesome nut! In its raw state, this nut is an antioxidant powerhouse. Yep, higher than gogi berries. Antioxidants help our bodies fight free radical damage, so it is SO important to be consuming enough of these helpers. Again, in its raw state, cacao contains incredible amounts of magnesium, vitamin C, iron, zinc and manganese (among others) helping those deficient in these areas. The list of benefits goes on and on, so go grab some today and add it to smoothies, trail mix, oatmeal, etc… You can find the powder, cacao nibs (my fav), or full bean…whatever is best for you.
GREEN POWER BLEND:
This blend is something I bought from Harmonic Arts Botanical Dispensary. I love the fact that it has so many great ingredients together for the perfect mix to add to shakes.
Here’s what it contains: Wheatgrass powder, Moringa Leaf, Alfalfa, Chlorella, Spirulina, hint of stevia. Per 6g of this mixture, you’re getting 30% DV of Vitamin A, 8% Vitamin C, 6% Calcium and 20% Iron. Great Numbers 🙂
The down low on how great this blend is…..
A shot of wheatgrass is said to be equivalent to 2lbs of leafy greens, making it extremely nutritious & cleansing to the body. Like all the greens in this mixture, wheatgrass is highly alkalizing, which is literally like a breath of fresh air to your insides! Loaded with amino acids, antioxidant, vitamins and minerals, wheatgrass proves to be a major immune booster. It also contains chlorophyll, which aside from also being extremely alkalizing, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it helps to rebuild and replenish red blood cells improving our energy and vitality. Pretty amazing.
Like wheatgrass, Moringa Leaf also has major antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Containing high mineral and vitamin contents, moringa leaf powder’s benefits range from improving skin/fine lines, detoxifying the body, improving digestion, and strengthening the immune system. Because detoxifying the body leads to better digestion & nutrient absorption, our bodies benefit greatly from foods that help us to do this!
Spirulina is an amazing blue-green algae that comes from various fresh bodies of water around the planet. Pound for pound, this superfood has the highest content of protein (complete protein) than any other food, consisting of up to 70%! Compare this to beef (22%) and lentils (26%). This high chlorophyll & iron containing algae makes for a great red blood cell booster/immune booster as well. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, alkalizing, detoxifying, brain-boosting, cholesterol lowering, and allergy improving…. the list goes on and on for the health benefits of spirulina.
I actually prefer having spirulina in a blend like this as it can have quite a strong taste on it’s own.
Also a high chlorophyll containing fresh water algae, Chlorella is comprised of about 60% protein and packs a huge nutrient punch. Providing vitamins (including B complex), minerals, & amino acids, chlorella is a detoxifier, cleanser, and strong immune booster. It is known for it’s cancer fighting properties as a highly alkaline, free radical fighting agent and because of its ability to bind to heavy metals (and other toxins) and help remove them from the body.
Hopefully this will inspire you to add a few more Superfoods to your daily diet! There are so many great options out there that are readily available and can improve your overall health & wellness. Do your research and see what might be beneficial for you!! Have fun with it and mix it up!!
